BAYT AL-RAZZAZ
Honored to have participated in an auction event supporting the Egyptian Heritage Rescue Foundation and Kahhal Looms, dedicated to preserving Egypt’s cultural legacy. This project is particularly significant given the ongoing urbanization and road expansions in historic Cairo, which threaten irreplaceable heritage sites.
The circular rug created with Kahhal Looms draws inspiration from my first visit to Bayt al-Razzaz in May 2023, where I was captivated by the beauty of its geometric frescoes, intricately carved ceilings, and stained glass—elements that embody the spirit of this 15th-century house. This unique hand-knotted piece translates these visual motifs into a compelling design, featuring colors that reflect Cairo’s essence: saffron, soft sky blue, warm greys, and tones reminiscent of dust and palm fronds.
This work honors a neighborhood in Cairo that embraced me during my initial visit and pays tribute to the artisans of khayameya, with whom I continue to collaborate. Together, we aim to keep Cairo’s rich stories alive, fostering awareness of our collective responsibility to cherish and protect this precious heritage.
